Barrie Newton, a volunteer whose hard work and passion has helped attract thousands to Barton's Bike Night, last night received the Barton Town Award.

Mr Newton, 56, took over as chairman of the Barton Bike Night committee in 2009, and has since helped to establish it as the biggest event of its kind in Europe.

The award was presented to Mr Newton by Councillor Dorothy Pearson in her final official act as Mayor of Barton.

Councillor Pearson's reign as Mayoress will conclude next Wednesday, May 9, when the new Mayor will be officially elected.

Mr Newton, a Barton resident throughout his life, welcomed the award and claimed it on behalf of all those who helped to make Barton Bike Night such a popular event.

The Barton Town Award recognises the work of a Barton resident who has helped the community in some way.

Last year Major Brenda Jeffrey picked up the award for her community work with the Salvation Army.

Barton Bike Night this year is due to be held on Wednesday, July 4.
